    Key Words Used Here

Some words on this site may appear familiar but are used with very specific meanings.

Human development is complex, and everyday language does not always capture what is happening beneath the surface.

For that reason, certain words are used carefully throughout the material on this site.

This page explains how some of those words are being used within this work.

The goal is not to create new terminology, but to make sure the ideas are understood as clearly as possible.

If a word seems unclear while reading the journey pages, you can return here at any time.

    First entries (starter glossary)

    Regulation

Regulation refers to the ability of the nervous system to settle, stabilize, and return toward balance after stress or activation.

It is not about suppressing emotions or controlling reactions.

It is about the body’s capacity to recover from stress and remain flexible in changing situations.

    Development

Development refers to the layered process through which human systems form over time.

Each stage builds upon earlier foundations, especially during early life when the brain and nervous system are most adaptable.

    Adaptation

Adaptations are strategies the human system develops in response to its environment.

Many behaviors that appear problematic later in life originally formed as ways of surviving or managing early conditions.

    Pattern

A pattern is a repeated way of responding to situations, relationships, or stress.

Patterns often develop early and continue automatically long after the conditions that created them have changed.

    Regulation Pressure

Regulation pressure refers to the strain placed on a nervous system when demands exceed the system’s current ability to regulate.

This pressure can build slowly over time or occur suddenly during overwhelming events.

Language shapes how we understand ourselves.

Clarifying the words we use helps make the patterns behind our experiences easier to see.
