    Words We Use Carefully

     These aren't new definitions.

These are familiar words used in a specific way throughout this project.

Dictionaries tell us what words can mean.

Here we're explaining how they're being used in this project.

By taking a moment to understand how they're being used here,

it becomes much easier for us to explore these ideas together.

    Understanding

    Understanding

    Understanding

     Common use:

Knowing something or having information about it.

    What we mean:

Seeing how something came to be, how it connects to other experiences, and why it makes sense. Understanding isn't just collecting facts. It changes how we see ourselves, other people, and the choices available to us.

    Experience

    Understanding

    Understanding

     Common use:

    Something that happened to you.

    What we mean:

Everything that has shaped the way you interpret life. Experiences don't simply become memories. They influence what feels safe or dangerous, what we notice, how we react, and how we understand ourselves and the world.

    Pattern

    Understanding

    Pattern

     Common use:

    Something that repeats.

    What we mean:

A way of thinking, feeling, or behaving that develops through repeated experiences. Patterns often happen automatically until we begin to understand where they came from.

    Lens

    Interpretation

    Pattern

     Common use:

    Something you look through.

    What we mean:

The way your accumulated experiences shape how you interpret yourself, other people, and the world around you. We rarely notice the lens itself—we simply assume we're seeing reality exactly as it is.

    Interpretation

    Interpretation

    Interpretation

     Common use:

The meaning you give to something.

    What we mean:

The explanation your mind creates about an experience. Two people can live through the same event and interpret it very differently, leading to completely different emotions, beliefs, and choices.

    Change

    Interpretation

    Interpretation

     Common use:

    Becoming different.

    What we mean:

A lasting shift that grows from understanding rather than force. We don't begin by trying to become someone else. We begin by seeing more clearly what has already been shaping us.

    Awareness

    Awareness

    Awareness

     Common use:

Being conscious of something or paying attention.

    What we mean:

Recognizing what is already happening within us—our thoughts, emotions, assumptions, and reactions—without immediately trying to change or judge them. Awareness allows understanding to begin.

    Curiosity

    Awareness

    Awareness

      Common use:

Wanting to know something or learn something new.

    What we mean:

A willingness to explore before reaching conclusions. Curiosity replaces self-judgment with questions that help us discover why our reactions make sense.

    Choice

    Awareness

    Choice

      Common use:

Selecting between two or more options.

    What we mean:

The freedom that becomes available once understanding replaces automatic reaction. We often can't choose differently until we first understand what has been guiding us.
